Working Knowledge International is a Johannesburg-based occupational health company that conducts medical examinations and provides fitness certificates for miners, drivers, construction workers and many other fields, both in our clinic in Isando as well as on site. All medicals are done in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and with the knowledge that a healthy employee is a productive employee.
A basic medical examination consists of the following:
- • A full physical examination
- • Height and weight
- • Urine test
- • Blood pressure and pulse
- • Glucose test
- • Vision screening
- • Lung function test
- • Audiometric screening (hearing test)
- • ECG, if the employee seems to have a cardiac abnormality
These programs are carried out at our clinic or on-site by one of our occupational health practitioner, or, if prescribed, by an occupational medical practitioner.
Additional tests might be done, depending upon the industry involved:
Based on the client's requirements and company policy, cannabis tests or multi-drug tests are conducted. This is especially important in the transport and mining industries. If a drug test result is found to be positive, the sample is sent to the Forensic Drug Testing Laboratory at the University of Pretoria for a confirmatory drug test.
Biological monitoring is a program for the periodic collection and analysis of blood, urine and tissue, or exhaled breath samples. The purpose of collecting samples is to detect the employee's exposure to, and absorption of hazardous substances, and to ensure that these substances are not adversely affecting them. We collect samples based upon what the employees are exposed to. These samples are collected and sent to a pathological lab for analysis.
Biological effects monitoring
Biological Effects Monitoring is the monitoring and measurement of the effect a substance has on the target organ. The substance the employee is exposed to will determine what these tests would consist of.
Certain industries, for example, mining, spray-painting, etc. require chest x-rays to be done. X-rays can be performed at our clinic, or employees can be referred to the closest x-ray department for this service. An on-site occupational health x-ray service can be arranged if requested by the client.
We provide broad Occupational Health support to companies so that they may meet legal requirements and increase worker productivity.
Working Knowledge International also offers Personal Health Risk Assessments, HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, and corporate Wellness Programs.
